Lander University was established in 1872, and it was founded by Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander, first starting as Williamston Female College, in Williamston, SC, being renamed in honor of its founder in 1904, when the university moved to its present location, in Greenwood. The institution's current name and mission was adopted in 1992, after it became a state-supported college, in 1973.

Lander's sports teams are known as the Bearcats, which compete in NCAA Division II, in Peach Belt Conference, for various sports, for both men and women, including for men's tennis, in which they won 12 national championships, so far, the Bearcats also competing in soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf, baseball and cross country.
